The CARDIO4Dakar program builds on the work of Better Hearts Better Cities - Dakar to support the Government of Senegal's efforts to treat and manage high blood pressure in the city of Dakar. This three-year project works with Senegal’s Ministry of Health and Social Action and focuses on improving cardiovascular health among the people of Dakar with technical assistance from the Swiss Tropical Public Health Institute.

In 2017, the Ministry of Health and Social Action—in collaboration with the Novartis Foundation and IntraHealth International—began implementing the Urban Health Initiative for Hypertension, also known as the Better Hearts Better Cities project, to test evidence-based, scalable approaches in Dakar and help thwart the rise of hypertension and other noncommunicable diseases throughout Senegal and the region.
