Accelerating Universal Access to Family Planning (AUAFP)

The USAID Accelerating Universal Access to Family Planning project, also known as Shukhi Jibon, contributes to the health and well-being of Bangladeshis and to accelerating family planning (FP) utilization by strengthening the capacity of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW), particularly the Directorate General of Family Planning (DGFP), the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), and the National Institute of Population Research and Training (NIPORT). The project supports developing and deploying skilled, responsive, and respectful FP providers; strengthens the delivery of quality FP services, especially for adolescents and youth, and postpartum women; and works with communities to transform norms around the use of family planning information and services. Shukhi Jibon relies on strong collaboration and coordination among government divisions, and other stakeholders, including community structures, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector.

Pathfinder International, in partnership with lntraHealth International and with strategic support from the Obstetrics Gynecology Society of Bangladesh (OGSB) and the University of Dhaka implements Shukhi Jibon over five years, from July 2018 to July 2023, in the four divisions of Bangladesh. IntraHealth's role includes:

  • Strengthening capacity to more effectively train medical providers and community health workers in family planning in both the public and private sectors,
  • Focusing and expanding public-sector family planning information and services to high-need groups such as adolescents, youth, newlyweds, and postpartum girls and women.

IntraHealth is strengthening in-service family planning training and supervision systems for health workers and working with training institutes to improve their management and planning capacity and offer a family planning certification program.
