On Saturday, Pape Gaye, IntraHealth president and CEO, spoke at the fourth annual meeting of Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) held at the University of California, San Diego as a part of the panel discussion and working session, Scaling Up, Saving Lives: Confronting the Health Workforce Crisis. Other panelists and presenters included:

• Michele Barry, Director, Center for Global Health and Senior Associate Dean, Global Health, Stanford University
• Emily Bearse, Recruitment Director, Global Health Corps
• Deogratias Niyizonkiza, Founder, Village Health Works
• Rajesh Panjabi, Executive Director, Tiyatien Health; Clinical Fellow in Medicine, Harvard Medical School.

The panelists focused on the global shortage of four million health workers and recent initiatives to sustain and build the health workforce as well as on potential interventions that can help reshape and reform medical training and the health care delivery system. “Paying attention to this issue—the shortage of health workers—and taking action is crucial if we are to make progress in development,” said Gaye.

CGI U brought together more than 1,000 students from 349 schools, 90 countries, and all 50 states. Each participant has made a Commitment to Action, which is a concrete plan to address an issue within CGI U’s focus areas: education, environment and climate change, peace and human rights, poverty alleviation, and public health. This year, students and student groups have made 950 new commitments. In addition, 59 leaders from national youth organizations are attending CGI U and have made 38 commitments.
