Every year, Tanzania celebrates the passing of the Uhuru Torch—a national symbol of freedom and light. Originally lit in 1961 on the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro, the torch represented the idea of shining hope for independence across the borders, reaching other African nations still under colonial rule.

Stakeholders from the Uganda Ministry of Health (MOH), universities, faith-based organizations, and other partners participated in meetings in July led by CapacityPlus staff member Wanda Jaskiewicz. They discussed and planned for field testing of a rapid rural retention assessment tool and a retention strategy costing tool.

CapacityPlus (led by IntraHealth International) is collaborating with the West African Health Organization (WAHO) to improve the human resources registration and licensing reporting systems for the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria by implementing iHRIS Qualify.

The Kenya Health Professional of the Year Award, sponsored by the IntraHealth-led Capacity Kenya project, was featured in an article in The Daily Nation on August 17, 2010.

Pat McLaughlin, Director of the Community Prevention of  Mother to Child Transmission of HIV Project in Ethiopia, was quoted in the IRIN Africa article: ETHIOPIA: Tackling the perils of pregnancy.

CapacityPlus’s Wanda Jaskiewicz participated in a technical workshop on improving rural retention of health workers in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic. Held June 21-25, the workshop was sponsored by the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization. The World Health Organization has invited CapacityPlus to help apply the WHO global retention recommendations in country-specific settings.

From July 26-28, CapacityPlus leaders took part in a coordinators’ meeting in Tokyo to contribute to planning the Global Health Workforce Alliance Second Global Forum on Human Resources for Health.

Kumar’s work to implement a web enabled KIOSK public grievance management and monitoring system—“LOKVANI”, an e-governance initiative—was recognized in India Today.
