Mali
IntraHealth is working with the Ministry of Health and local partners to strengthen Mali’s national health systems, address its shortage and unequal distribution of qualified health workers (particularly in the country’s rural northern regions), and increase access to maternal, newborn and child health, family planning and reproductive health, and malaria services.
Key successes have included strengthening a model rural nursing school in northern Mali to better enable it to prepare and deploy health workers that are less likely to leave the region, and expanding the number of health workers authorized and trained to perform a life-saving practice to prevent postpartum hemorrhage during childbirth, the leading cause of maternal deaths.
Through CapacityPlus, IntraHealth is delivering a comprehensive program of assistance that aligns with the Government of Mali’s human resources for health policy and plan and incorporates principles and strategies from the US Government’s Global Health Initiative. Activities include implementing IntraHealth’s open source iHRIS Manage software to provide health leaders with reliable health workforce data for making policy and management decisions; establishing a Mali Health Workforce Observatory to bring multi-sectoral stakeholders together to address health workforce challenges; improving health worker training and retention; and piloting innovative education methods. As many of these activities focus on family planning and reproductive health, CapacityPlus is also proposing strategies for integrating gender equality approaches into health workforce strengthening activities.
Other IntraHealth initiatives in Mali include:
- Planning and conducting health worker training and follow-up in malaria treatment and developing malaria-related behavior change communications activities and materials
- Scaling-up the practice of active management of the third stage of labor (AMTSL) to prevent postpartum hemorrhage
- Integrating AMTSL and essential newborn care into preservice education and in-service training for matrones (a cadre of midwives)
- Capacity-building of health workers in maternal and child health and family planning services through supportive supervision and quality assurance techniques
- Assisting the Ministry of Health to finalize a national strategy for preventing and repairing obstetric fistula and leading in the management of fistula care, repair, and prevention activities in the country.
The slide show "Our World" shares the story of IntraHealth's maternal health work in Mali through pictures.
