Supervisors from Rwanda’s national Treatment and Research AIDS Center (TRAC Plus) praised the quality of HIV clinical services they witnessed during an evaluation visit to Nyagatare District Hospital in January.The IntraHealth-led USAID HIV/AIDS Clinical Services Program (HCSP) supports the  hospital, located in the Eastern Province of Rwanda.

Marthe Uwizeyimana says she cannot compare delivery at home with a health facility delivery. “Before, even if I was with my mother-in-law, I had problems and many complications while and after giving birth,” says Marthe, who has had four pregnancies in eight years. Her third child died when he was still young. “At the fourth birth, I was at the health center, where things were clean. I can say that I was in good hands. Before, I was bleeding a lot after birth, but this time it was not the case.”

High poverty rates have put health care out of reach for many Malians. Outside the capital city, Bamako, medical care can be difficult to access, as 25% of the population lives more than 15 kilometers from a community health center. Those who can reach health care establishments often find them short-staffed and undersupplied. These factors contribute to Mali’s high child and maternal mortality rates (217 out of 1,000 live births and 1,200 out of 100,000 live births, respectively)*.
