Capacity Kenya

IntraHealth is working with Kenya’s health care leadership to improve their capacity in human resources for health (HRH). Launched in 2009, this five-year USAID-funded project aimes to strengthen human resources for health systems of the public, faith-based, and private health sectors to ensure improved delivery to primary health care and, ultimately, to improve health outcomes of the Kenyan people.

Capacity Kenya’s planned interventions include:

  • HRH worker planning, policy, and practices interventions
  • HRH health worker development interventions
  • Workforce performance systems to improve productivity and retention for delivery of HIV, family planning/reproductive health, maternal and child health, malaria and tuberculosis services at the community level.
Capacity Kenya will also build on the work accomplished by the IntraHealth-led Capacity Project by:
  • Further developing the Human Resources Information System (HRIS)
  • Continuing the workplace climate improvement (WCI) initiative's work on retaining health care workers in rural areas
  • Strengthening human resources for health for improved community-level primary health care service delivery
  • Assisting the Ministry of Health in developing community health worker standards, guidelines, and practices.
The program aims to meet its objectives through the following strategies:
  • Building local capacity for HRIS development
  • Incorporating lessons learned from the WCI Initiative to improve the morale, retention, and productivity of health workers in an approach that can be scaled up
  • Advancing community-level primary health service delivery for HIV, family planning, reproductive health, maternal and child health, malaria, and tuberculosis health care services
  • Working with health sector leaders and stakeholders to determine creative and pragmatic approaches to incorporating community health workers into the health care system.

IntraHealth is working with its partners Management Sciences for Health (MSH), Training Resources Group (TRG), the African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) and Deloitte and Touche.
