Namibia Capacity Building for Country Owned HIV/AIDS Services

IntraHealth led a five-year, USAID-funded program focused on strengthening Namibia’s health systems and helping health workers in Namibia to provide the best possible comprehensive HIV prevention, care, and treatment services. Launched in 2008, this project worked with Namibian faith-based mission hospitals, nongovernmental organizations, and professional organizations across the country.

Selected initiatives

  • Helped to stop the spread of HIV by providing services to prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission, increasing voluntary medical male circumcision, and working with adolescents to prevent pregnancy and HIV transmission.
  • Provided HIV testing and counseling for individuals and couples and as well as outreach testing and counseling for hard-to-reach populations that have not been tested before.
  • Provided antiretroviral therapy and care for people living with HIV.
  • Strengthened the referral process for HIV care in Namibia by designing a new bi-directional referral system.
  • Offered life-saving training for health workers in emergency obstetric care.
  • Enhanced health workers’ on-the-job performance through IntraHealth’s performance improvement approach, which offers supportive supervision and mentoring to ensure that best practices are in place.
