IntraHealth and PEPFAR Partnership Means HIV Services for Millions

Thanks to IntraHealth International’s longstanding partnership with the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, or PEPFAR, millions of people across the globe have received lifesaving services for HIV prevention, care, and treatment.

Our PEPFAR-funded programs span Central America and Africa, and range from preservice education for health workers to voluntary medical male circumcision for HIV, which reduces men’s risk of acquiring HIV through heterosexual intercourse by around 60%

With support from PEPFAR, we’ve worked with local partners, health workers, and ministries of health to:

  • Provide care and treatment for key populations—female sex workers, men who have sex with men, and people who inject drugs—in Central America, South Sudan, and Senegal. 38,722 clients have begun antiretroviral treatment in 35 of our project-supported health facilities across Central America during the lifetime of our project.
  • Invest in human resources for health and preservice education in Kenya. 25,570 health professional students have benefitted from low-interest student loans through the Afya Elimu Fund
  • Offer voluntary medical male circumcision services in Tanzania. 1,045,501 Tanzanian men and boys have been served since 2011.
  • Foster data-rich programming methods in South Sudan and Namibia.
  • Make HIV prevention, care, and treatment services available to more people in Uganda and Namibia. 91% of Namibian antiretroviral patients in all eight project-supported districts have a documented suppressed viral load, and 563,706 individuals were tested for HIV as part of our RHITES-E project, achieving 145% of the annual target.

Globally, our programs provided 1,686,178 people with HIV testing and results and 153,812 individuals with antiretroviral treatment in 2018.

“At IntraHealth, we're taking the next step toward an HIV-free generation by partnering with local organizatons around the world to prepare them to be the prime recipients of PEPFAR funds,” says Kate Stratten, director of Southern Africa programs at IntraHealth.
