Senegal

Senegal mapHome to vibrant music and beautiful beaches, Senegal lies on the westernmost point of Africa.  Considered by many to be a model democracy, Senegal has a stable economy that is threatened by poverty and unemployment. The Senegalese people also suffer from high maternal and child mortality and morbidity rates.

IntraHealth is working in five regions of Senegal to improve the quality and accessibility of health care services, increase the use of family planning services and empower women to make health care decisions.  IntraHealth is also assisting Senegal’s government in managing HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria grants.

Building on IntraHealth’s previous work to improve reproductive and child health services, IntraHealth and its partners focus on several goals:

Senegalese family

  • Reduce the under-five mortality rate
  • Reduce the maternal mortality rate
  • Increase the availability, variety, use and social acceptance of family planning
  • Engage men in family planning, safe motherhood and involved fatherhood
  • Improve health care provider training and accountability
  • Decentralize access to health care while maintaining quality.

In addition, IntraHealth is leading a five-year Pfizer-funded project to fight malaria in Senegal. Awarded in September 2007, the project is part of Pfizer’s Mobilize against Malaria Program, funded through the company’s Enabling Global Health Care Initiative. The malaria program is designed to help close critical gaps in malaria treatment and education in Ghana, Kenya and Senegal. IntraHealth will collaborate with the Senegal Ministry of Health and Pfizer to design, implement and monitor the community-level malaria prevention and treatment program.
