World AIDS Day 2011: Getting to Zero
The goal: zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination, zero AIDS-related deaths.
December 1st marks World AIDS Day focused on “Getting to Zero.” The International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa will take place December 4–8th in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with a theme of “Own, Scale-up and Sustain,” providing an advocacy platform to mobilize African leaders, partners, and communities to increase ownership, commitment, and support to the HIV/AIDS response.
In honor of these events, IntraHealth commends the health workers on the frontline of HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment efforts for their dedication to saving lives and for their role in the significant progress made toward ending HIV/AIDS.
According to a recent UNAIDS report:
- Annual new infections fell 21% between 1997 and 2010.
- HIV incidence has declined by more than 25% between 2001 and 2009 in 22 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, the region most affected by HIV.
- An estimated 2.5 million lives have been saved in low- and middle-income countries since 1995 due to access to antiretroviral therapy.
Without access to a health worker, people living with HIV/AIDS lack adequate treatment, and more people become infected. IntraHealth’s HIV/AIDS work is driven by a commitment to provider-initiated, client-centered care that integrates HIV/AIDS services with other services people need, including family planning, nutritional support, and treatment of other diseases like tuberculosis. Through health services supported by IntraHealth last year, 547,635 individuals received HIV counseling, testing, and test results; and 22,277 HIV-positive individuals received antiretroviral treatment.
