Walter Davenport

Walter DavenportWalter Davenport is a certified public accountant who retired recently as an audit partner with Cherry, Bekaert & Holland, a regional accounting and consulting firm located in Raleigh. As director of the firm's Not-For-Profit Industry Group he focused on auditing and on financial and business consulting for not-for-profit entities. A North Carolina native, he began his career in the Atlanta office of Arthur Anderson & Company. In 1974, he returned to North Carolina and was one of the initial incorporators of Garrett and Davenport, P.C., CPAs, the largest and oldest minority CPA firm in North Carolina. The company later merged into Cherry, Bekaert and Holland.  Throughout his working life Davenport has been an active volunteer and board member to a wide variety of nonprofit groups, businesses, and public commissions, many of them in the areas of health and education. Currently he serves on the boards of Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Way of the Greater Triangle, the BB&T Advisory Board, the UNC Board of Governors, and the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy. He also has been active in local, state and national political campaigns. He is a graduate of Morehouse College in Atlanta.
