Securing Donor Support for Health Workers
IntraHealth works with an array of partners to make more resources available to address the health workforce crisis.
The US Government’s Global Health Initiative (GHI) is the government-wide approach to health and is designed to save lives, promote security, and maximize results. The GHI is built around the principles of collaborating for impact, doing more of what works, building and expanding on country-owned programs, and innovating for results. It recognizes the critical role of the health workforce but does not have a specific strategy to address the crisis.
IntraHealth proposes a strategy for achieving the GHI’s health workforce aims. By adopting this strategy, the US Government could make optimal use of funds and ensure that health workers are available to support the government’s contribution to achieving the Millennium Development Goals.
We also encourage support for health workforce strengthening under the Health Systems Funding Platform, a collaborative effort of the GAVI Alliance; the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria; and the World Bank, facilitated by the World Health Organization in consultation with countries and other key stakeholders. As the Platform structures the funding streams to align the efforts of its partners, we urge it to consider health workforce strengthening as a distinct objective.
