Rwanda Launches 2010 Campaign against HIV on World AIDS Day

Nov 30, 2010

Tomorrow, Rwanda will launch its annual national campaign against HIV/AIDS in Rubavu with the slogan “Protecting oneself and others against HIV is everyone’s responsibility. I choose to use condoms.”

Starting on World AIDS Day, the campaign will run through February 2011. The campaign aims to increase the availability of HIV counseling and testing services by offering these services at more times, including on all weekdays and some weekends, as well as through mobile counseling and testing services and condom distribution. The campaign is supported by a number of partners, including IntraHealth International through its HIV/AIDS Clinical Services Program (HCSP).

During last year’s campaign, 28,921 people were counseled and tested for HIV at sites supported by the IntraHealth HCSP. Of those individuals, 2.9% tested HIV-positive, and as a result, 683 new clients started antiretroviral therapy in these clinics.

The IntraHealth HIV/AIDS Clinical Services Program operates in the Rwandan districts of Gasabo, Gicumbi, Nyagatare and Rulindo and is funded by the United States Agency for International Development. Read more about this program here.
