Rob Carter, Senior Accounting Manager
Rob Carter, senior accounting manager, was drawn to work with IntraHealth nine years ago because of “the Africa connection.” He explains: “I lived in Kenya for two years and was in Zimbabwe, on local terms and conditions, for 17 years, and for a long time had no intention of ever leaving there.
“But you never leave Africa, and I feel as though I still have a foot in two continents—well, three if you count where I originally came from.”
Born and raised in England, Rob did not always focus his career on numbers. “I initially taught German and French for a few years in England and Kenya,” he says. “The options for teaching these languages were limited in Africa, though, so, having been relatively numerate at school, I decided accounting was a good way into the world of business.”
Rob is currently in transition from supporting all IntraHealth international field reporting to focusing on those under the new CapacityPlus project, once new field offices are set up. The USAID-funded CapacityPlus builds on and expands the successes of the Capacity Project (also IntraHealth-led). Thus, Rob’s management skills will be utilized greatly considering that the Capacity Project supported work in 47 countries.
Rob takes pride in having strengthened the connection between the finance staff in Chapel Hill and the finance staff in the field—an ever-present challenge for any global organization.
What he likes most about working for IntraHealth he says, is “the variety—no two days are alike—and the international nature of the work and the international mix of people. Oh, and the numbers…”
