Nicaragua
IntraHealth worked in Nicaragua from 2006–2009 through USAID’s Capacity Project. The Capacity Project assisted the Autonomous National University of Nicaragua to adapt already existing courses on HIV and sponsor the training of faculty members from health-related schools. The refresher training course for faculty included the following content: basic HIV information; tuberculosis coinfection; universal infection prevention practices; and reduction of stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV, including gender issues. The Capacity Project also trained university students from medical, nursing, social work, and other health-related disciplines via a three-day workshop to prepare them as voluntary counseling and testing peer counselors. In addition, the Project supported income generating activities for people living with HIV and provided training on general administration, management, and handicraft production and sales to the Centro de Información y Servicios de Asesoría en Salud (CISAS) project in Leon. Through a successful media campaign, participation at community fairs, and sales from their store, CISAS achieved such a high level of sales of their handicrafts that it opened a second store in Chinandega with the profits made in Leon.
