Jenny Chafe: Stress Reduction and Wellness Coaching

I think IntraHealth’s scope and focus are as huge and as important as they are desperately needed. I applaud the organization for developing such wide-ranging initiatives to support health workers and improve the lives and health of millions of people across the world and in developing countries especially. Having lived amidst poverty and tuberculosis in Nepal during college and having traveled in sub-Saharan Africa where a friend of mine got malaria due to inadequate medical protection, I have seen a glimpse of the world that IntraHealth’s programs support. We face daunting challenges but also have much greater odds for success with the technology and global awareness we’ve gained in the past 10 to 15 years. With so many top-down initiatives out there, IntraHealth’s grassroots work to support the health worker as the focal point in this global fight is a refreshing and vital part of the equation in saving lives or changing them the better.

Recently I gave a workshop for stress relief and self-care to IntraHealth’s staff. As a former nonprofit staffer myself, I know how hard they are all working and how stressful it can be. It felt good to be able to contribute to their mission by supporting the staff to reduce and prevent stress and burnout so they can continue to do this important work for the greater good.

I believe in giving back to my local community, country and world through direct volunteer efforts, grassroots organizing through organizations, and supporting larger initiatives for causes such as human rights, ending extreme poverty, and the environment. It’s fun, it feels good to help, and if we each do a little we can all do a lot.

I help service-oriented professionals or parents who feel overwhelmed with stress and who need to get back a sense of calm, balance and flow. I also work with performing artists who are stuck or burned out and want to regain inspiration and bring authenticity into their performance. Generally people who come to see me have tried approaches that only get them partway to where they want to go. We look at what’s missing and I help them learn practical tools for reconnecting to themselves, their deeper goals, and their art.
