IntraHealth Presents at GlobeMed Regional Summit in Chapel Hill
Earlier this month, GlobeMed held its regional summit at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. GlobeMed is a US-based university student network that partners with health organizations in the developing world to support health center development, address child malnutrition, and improve reproductive health, while increasing the students’ understanding of global health issues.
Laura Hoemeke, IntraHealth International director of strategic communications, gave the keynote speech at the summit. In her remarks, Hoemeke discussed IntraHealth’s approach to promoting sustainable health system strengthening, and its special focus on health workers. She highlighted IntraHealth’s support of strong partnerships and country ownership, citing examples from IntraHealth’s work in Rwanda, where she served as the director of the USAID-funded Twubakane Decentralization and Health Program from 2005 to early 2010. Hoemeke also shared stories from her experiences working in more than 20 African countries over the past 20 years, including Benin, the Central African Republic, Mali, and Senegal. “I was thoroughly impressed by the questions and comments that GlobeMed members shared after my talk,” she says. “It was great to realize, too, that GlobeMed and IntraHealth both focus on partnership, and that these enthusiastic students are accomplishing great things by working in close partnership with local communities around the world.”
