Improving Access and Uptake of Routine Confidential Counseling and Testing

IntraHealth is working through this CDC-funded program to improve access to and uptake of quality confidential HIV counseling and testing in two districts of the Republic of Zambia: Namwala and Luangwa. IntraHealth leads this five-year, $1.5 million program, collaborating with the Ministry of Health and local Zambian partners. Launched in 2007, the initiative focuses on:
  • Making confidential HIV counseling and testing services available and accessible in Namwala and Luangwa
  • Increasing the number of people who receive counseling and testing
  • Increasing the number of HIV-positive people referred to treatment for antiretroviral therapy and prevention of mother-to-child transmission services
  • Reducing stigma and discrimination through support groups and community outreach activities.

The program aims to meet its objectives through the following strategies:

  • Establishing and expanding counseling and testing services for rural populations
  • Increasing the demand for counseling and testing services by establishing mobile and home-based counseling and testing services and training lay counselors to provide counseling and testing services.
