Fostering Innovation and Technology for the Health Workforce
IntraHealth advocates for the design and use of health worker-centered information technologies. We assist country governments to take the lead in building integrated, interoperable information systems that harness the power of open source. We also support the world’s largest collection of open access resources on the global health workforce.
Free of licensing fees, open source technology is ideally suited for low-resource environments. IntraHealth collaborates with governments and institutions to design and apply open source solutions to strengthen countries’ ability to use health information for policy and planning. The IntraHealth OPEN initiative focuses on global alliances, expanded access to infrastructure, local innovation, and the development of tools that are cost-efficient and technically viable at the country level.
The absence of accurate and readily available health workforce information is a major impediment to effective planning and decision-making. IntraHealth supports two key tools to help make health workforce data and resources accessible:
- Without current, accurate data on health workers, countries cannot ensure that the right provider is in the right place with the right skills. A strong human resources information system (HRIS) helps health sector leaders quickly answer key policy questions affecting health care service delivery. The iHRIS Suite of software is free and open source, so local developers can modify the code to suit their needs.
- The HRH Global Resource Center is the largest global library of health workforce resources focused on developing countries. It contains nearly 3,000 reports, articles, presentations, tools, background papers, and other materials. An average of 50,000 visitors from 172 countries use the site each month.
