Some family planning methods used in Kenya

The Extending Service Delivery (ESD) Project hosted the “ESD in Africa Knowledge Exchange Conference,” May 11–13, in Nairobi, Kenya. The conference brought together public health experts and stakeholders to share innovative programs and best practices in integrated and community-based family planning.

One of the main conference organizers, IntraHealth’s Pauline Muhuhu, said that the conference organizers strove toward “Ministry of Health ownership and commitment to implement and scale up promising family planning and reproductive health programs for sustainability.”

World Bank health-sector specialist—and IntraHealth Board member—Khama Rogo gave the keynote address to representatives from Angola, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Guinea, Kenya, Northern Nigeria, South Sudan, and Tanzania.

Participants shared and documented their experiences, lessons learned, and programming recommendations for reaching underserved populations. These will be compiled and widely disseminated in the region, especially to US Agency for International Development (USAID) missions, ministries of health, and regional institutions who can apply the findings to future programs, training, and policies.  In addition, participants identified new learnings and developed plans for introduction of practices in their countries.

The ESD Project aims to increase the availability and use of quality reproductive health and family planning services in developing countries. Led by Pathfinder International, the USAID-funded ESD Project is supported by IntraHealth, Management Sciences for Health and the Meridian Group.
