Ethiopia Community PMTCT Project Recognized at Oromia Award Ceremony
In Ethiopia’s Oromia Regional State, the IntraHealth International-led Community Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV Project was recently recognized for its valuable maternal health contributions. The Project has worked throughout Ethiopia since 2009 to strengthen aspects of the health sector—especially the health extension program—that provide care for pregnant women and their children, to ensure that more women have access to and utilize these services, and to increase the provision of monitoring and care services for all HIV-positive clients within the community.
Oromia’s Vice President Abdulaziz Mohamed presented Project Director Pat McLaughlin with a certificate of appreciation and a gift of ceremonial clothes from the Oromia Tribes, serving as a gesture of respect and a sign that the Project’s work has touched the hearts and minds of those within the tribes.
Through this project, IntraHealth advances its commitment to improve health care in Ethiopia. For more than five years, IntraHealth has worked to make prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV services available to women who need them, and to assist HIV-positive women to form their own mothers’ support groups to help care for themselves and their children.
