Costa Rica
Through the Central America Capacity Program, IntraHealth is working in Costa Rica to improve the capacity of human resources for health to deliver quality HIV/AIDS care and treatment through improving preservice and in-service education, systemizing and institutionalizing performance improvement, and integrating care and treatment with community-based support.
IntraHealth’s work also includes:
- Monitoring care and treatment services by establishing a performance information system and using data for decision-making
- Supporting innovation at the health facility and community level through use of information communications technology, such as mLearning and appropriate training information systems
- Addressing cross-cutting themes by incorporating gender equity as well as stigma and discrimination reduction across all five technical strategies.
IntraHealth worked in Costa Rica from 2006-2009 through the Capacity Project. One of the key results included working with the University of Costa Rica to adapt already existing courses on HIV and sponsor the training of faculty members from health-related schools. The university adapted and developed training materials and implemented the refresher training course for faculty with the following content: basic HIV information; tuberculosis coinfection; universal infection prevention practices; and reduction of stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV, including gender issues.
