CapacityPlus and WHO Partner to Keep Health Workers in Rural Areas
Although half the world’s population lives in rural areas, only about 25% of physicians and 38% of nurses work in these communities, according to the World Health Organization, limiting access to health care.
Earlier this week, IntraHealth International’s global project, CapacityPlus, released Partnering to keep health workers in the communities that need them, an interview with Dr. Carmen Dolea, technical officer at the World Health Organization and a leading expert in health workforce migration and retention. Dr. Dolea talks about the WHO's global policy recommendations for increasing access to health workers through improved retention in remote and rural areas and CapacityPlus’ key role in this work.
CapacityPlus is currently partnering with the WHO to help apply the recommendations at the national level. In Uganda, for example, CapacityPlus has helped the Ministry of Health obtain health worker preferences to assist in designing incentive packages and other retention interventions.
Led by IntraHealth International, CapacityPlus is the USAID-funded global project that uniquely focuses on the health workforce needed to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
