Belize

Through the Central America Capacity Program, IntraHealth is working in Belize to improve the capacity of human resources for health to deliver quality HIV/AIDS care and treatment through improving preservice and in-service education, systemizing and institutionalizing performance improvement, and integrating care and treatment with community-based support.

IntraHealth’s work also includes:

  • Monitoring care and treatment services by establishing a performance information system and using data for decision-making
  • Supporting innovation at the health facility and community level through use of information communications technology, such as mLearning and appropriate training information systems
  • Addressing cross-cutting themes by incorporating gender equity as well as stigma and discrimination reduction across all five technical strategies.

From 2006-2009, IntraHealth worked in Belize through the Capacity Project. The Project provided state-of-the-art training to faculty members of the Schools of Nursing and Allied Health and Social Work of the University of Belize in order to upgrade the university’s role in the national response against HIV and establish it as a national training center for HIV counselors. Sixteen faculty members were trained on voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) and teaching methodologies, and six were certified as core trainers for VCT. Since the initial workshop, the trained faculty shared the knowledge and skills with their students, other faculty members, and Ministry of Health providers.
