“I was very happy to work with an international organization dedicated to strengthening health workers and health systems,” says Beatrice Kapya, administrative specialist with the Tanzania Human Resource Capacity Project.

With IntraHealth since 2007, Beatrice oversees the day-to-day activities of the Tanzania office. She is also the go-to person when her colleagues need to understand IntraHealth’s policies and procedures. From the start, Beatrice was one of the staff members who dug into USAID’s guidelines and rules and regulations, and now, while many field staff members in Tanzania are out meeting with health leaders and managers to improve the country’s health workforce, she makes sure the project stays in compliance with the donor. This is work that makes her very proud.

“At the beginning I worried it would be very difficult to learn so many regulations, but after IntraHealth trained me,” she says, “I found it to be much easier than I thought it would be.”

The strong sense of teamwork is what Beatrice likes the most about her job. “We really respect one another,” she notes. “I get great support, too, from our country director and IntraHealth staff in Chapel Hill.”

She says she has learned more than just the duties she performs day-to-day. “Working at this organization has taught me a great deal about sustainable development and how it plays an integral and important role in improving human lives, especially in Third World countries,” she explains. “It can change a country's status quo.”
