Article on Improving Health Worker Morale Selected for Global Collection
The publication “What about the health workers?”: Improving the work climate at rural facilities in Kenya has been selected by a UK-based organization, Teaching-aids at Low Cost, for issue 11 of its eTALC Health Development CD-ROM. It was produced by the IntraHealth International-led Capacity Project.
Since 2001, eTALC has disseminated over 60,000 free CDs with up-to-date health information to health workers in developing countries. The Kenya story eTALC selected is based on the Capacity Project’s work with the Ministry of Health to pilot simple, low-cost interventions to improve the workplace environment in ten rural facilities. This work was driven by survey findings that health worker morale at the ten pilot sites was very low. Teams based in the health facilities then successfully employed low-cost approaches to improve morale. In a subsequent survey, nearly all staff expressed they were satisfied and intended to stay at their jobs. All sites also reported increased demand for service.
This work is continuing through Capacity Kenya, which is led by IntraHealth International and builds on the success of the Capacity Project.
