Pape Gaye, President and CEO of IntraHealth, will present "Building and Motivating the Workforce" at the Disease Control Priorities Workshop in Juba, Southern Sudan, on June 9 and 10. Jointly organized by the World Bank and the Ministry of Health of Southern Sudan, this workshop aims to disseminate the lessons and conclusions of the Disease Control Priorities 2nd Edition (DCP2) Initiative to policy makers. This workshop will provide intensive training on Southern Sudan's health issues by World Bank staff and development partners. Each session will reference the Southern Sudanese health care situation or that of countries of a similar level of development, expenditure and disease burden.
Southern Sudan's health care situation includes an urgent need to rebuild a health system decimated by years of unrest. Maternal mortality and child mortality rates are estimated to be among the highest in the world, and only 25% of the population has access to health care services. While the country has relatively low HIV prevalence, the need for strong prevention programs is critical as soldiers are demobilized, displaced residents return home, and travel, trade and labor migration increase.
Gaye’s presentation will build upon his three decades of leadership in international health. Prior to his appointment as IntraHealth's CEO, Gaye led the organization's regional office for West, Central and North Africa. With his expertise in reproductive health, family planning and HIV/AIDS program development, management and oversight, Gaye contributes significantly to the strong reputation IntraHealth enjoys in human capacity development, training and learning and performance improvement. IntraHealth is active in Southern Sudan through the CDC-funded Reduce the Impact of HIV Program and the Capacity Project, funded by USAID.
