Preventing And Treating HIV/AIDS

helping hands“The most important part is they find someone who is really listening, paying attention to them,” says Eftu Ahmed, community officer with the Ethiopian team dedicated to preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV. The project includes a support group for HIV-positive mothers. "They’re really speaking freely, laughing, playing because they know nobody is judging them for who they are.  The freedom of expressing themselves is really what this program does above the infection prevention.”

“I approach pregnant women in the room or waiting area and discuss with them the testing advantages for themselves and their baby by setting myself as an example of an HIV-positive woman raising an HIV-negative baby,” says Meskerem Alemu, 21, a leader in the mothers’ support group program.

“The mothers are willing and eager to be tested after our testimony of living positively," says Tsehay Ayalew, 28, another group leader.
